The New Mexico Veterans Memorial Library is dedicated to retired USAF Colonel Gilbert Martinez, who devoted himself to the establishment and initial development of the library collection before his sudden death in 2009.
The library’s broad mission is to develop, preserve, and make available as fine a collection as possible of books and materials concerning domestic and international military affairs and history. Approximately 6,000 cataloged and uncataloged books, (in 41 separate categories ranging from the American Revolution to World War II to the War on Terror), are maintained in the Visitor’s Center, both in the library – which is also now the Foundation’s office – and in the basement. We also possess hundreds of VHS tapes, DVDs, and retired magazines all pertaining to military history. More than 99% of our collection has been donated by veterans and/or their families, which is why this library is so unique. American veterans have traveled in their careers to sites around the globe and their donations reflect their interests and experiences. Also shelved, in the basement, is an Oral History inventory of approximately 600 interviews with selected veterans from World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War; the originals of these interviews are maintained at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. We also maintain a Special Collection of military history books, some of which date back to the U.S. Civil War and are housed in a beautiful cabinet, and many others have been signed by their authors. All of this material is excellent for scholarly research. Click on the blue button above to view the PDF inventory of our catalogued books. New Mexico Veterans Memorial Foundation memberships are available to interested parties, which allows one to check out the material. The library is maintained by volunteer librarians. Please call 505-768-4498 for additional information or if you are interested in helping the library grow by becoming a volunteer. |
