War On Terror Kiosk

The War on Terror Kiosk commemorates the fighting that took place in the Philippines, Iraq, Lebanon, Yemen, Afghanistan, and wherever else people have perished while serving their country.

Around the kiosk lay bricks for the young people who died: 60 from the Army, 14 from the Marine Corps, 8 from the Air Force, and 1 from the Navy – all were from New Mexico. The hats and shoes are bronzed, and all of the uniforms belonged to people who perished.

Nothing on the uniforms was altered except for one item: Lt. Archuleta was an Air Force pilot who died when her helicopter was shot down. At the time, she was on orders for promotion. Therefore, her uniform was modified to include captain’s bars.

CURRENT CONFLICTS
The military actions in Afghanistan and Iraq since 1990 have resulted in a renewed reliance on state-based guard and reserve units that coincided with an increased role for women in combat.

The dependence on New Mexico-based active duty units such as the tactical wing of stealth fighters out of Holloman Air Force Base has also been underscored.

The future will be one that continues to be defined by the state’s diversity, resulting in a rich and distinct group of American veterans. Through them, the living and the past will survive.
