Dedicated by the Roadrunner Chapter of the American Merchant Marine, June 9, 2007. For their sacrifices and dedicated service to their company, this monument is dedicated to all Merchant Marines and Naval Armed Guards who sailed merchant ships during World War II.
The Merchant Marine was involved in every major beach-head landing of World War II, carrying troops and supplies as well as planes and fuel to the airfields. The New Mexico Merchant Marine casualty rate was one of the highest of all the services. The Merchant Marine Liberty Ship SS Stephen Hopkins sank the German gunship (Stier), the only German surface warship that was sunk by the U.S.A. in a surface battle during the war.
